Watch Dogs is the latest open world action adventure game from Ubisoft You play as Aiden Pierce, a hacker and vigilante, who after the murder of his niece sets out to find who's responsible and get revenge. While the story of Watch Dogs is unique at first; centering around Aiden and his relationship with his sister, nephew, and niece instead of his wife or daughter; it isn't long before it gets boring. The writing is pretty lackluster, and the characters are pretty forgettable. They also aren't really fleshed out and by the end of the game I didn't really care what happened to Adiens family or even Aiden himself. The only memorable character was Aidens gun for hire, Jordi, and he isn't even in the game that much.
The gameplay in Watch Dogs is an open world shooter, but the main focus is hacking. Aiden can use his smartphone to hack cameras, traffic lights, steam pipes, road blockers and various other things around the city. This adds a really unique playstyle to watchdogs. You can either go into a room guns blazing or hack objects in the room in order to manipulate the enemies, killing them without getting your hands dirty. Watch Dogs also has a heavy emphasis on shooting and parkour. You can hide behind cover during firefights and climb over obstacles in order to finish off the enemies. The cover system and shooting work really well. It is very easy to move in and out of cover without running into any issues. The shooting makes it very easy to aim and is very responsive. There is also a slow motion mechanic that makes getting headshots even easier. The parkour mechanic is very disappointing however. Aiden can only climb over obstacles when prompted. He can't roll and he can't jump. This makes getting to certain places very annoying. There will be a small gap that Aiden should be able to go over but can't because he doesn't have the ability to jump, making the parkour mechanic not really parkour at all. The biggest issue with Watch Dogs is the driving. It’s just awful. Every car feels really stiff and hard to control. It’s incredibly hard to make any sort of turn without overshooting it or spinning out. The only vehicles in the game that are not infuriating to drive are the motorcycles.
Watch Dogs also has online play and its actually a lot of fun. There is Online Free roam, Online Tailing which has you join a random players game and try to profile them, Online Hacking which has you join a random players game and try to hack them, Online Decryption which has a bunch of players fighting to get a file, the ctOS Challenge which has you race through checkpoints while someone with the ctOS app tries to stop you by putting up obstacles, and there is Online Racing which is just racing. However, a big issue with the multiplayer is that you can’t join a public match with friends, only private matches. Also, not only can you join a random persons game, they can join yours. This will happen all the time while playing. You can be busy getting collectibles and have a person start hacking you, making you stop what you’re doing and hunt them down. This is extremely annoying especially if its the last thing you feel like doing. You can turn off online invasions, but doing this resets your notoriety to zero and any online specific skill you unlock will be lost.
Watch Dogs was a little disappointing to me. It doesn’t do anything groundbreaking except for the hacking element, but that gets old pretty fast. However, despite all of its flaws, I don’t feel like I wasted my money with this game. The overall story is about 20 plus hours, and the game is full of side missions such as fixer contracts, criminal convoys, digital trips, and many other mini games and collectables that will keep you playing long after you’ve beaten it, especially if you like getting trophies and achievements.
